Award-winning

Chicken Pie Duo!

Not one, but two highly commended pies to add to our accolades!

A multi award-winning North East gastropub has added a further six accolades to its list of culinary achievements at the most competitive British Pie Awards to date. The team at The Woodmans Arms, Whickham, scooped one gold, four silvers and a bronze for its pies, despite stiff competition for the coveted awards this year, with a record 976 entries.

Highly Commended Awards were presented to both its new chicken pie concoctions – Queen’s Coronation Chicken and Chicken, Mushroom, Truffle & Tarragon – ranking both in the top three chicken pies in the country. It received a Gold Award for its Steak, Guinness & Leek Pie – the recipe’s second award in three years.  Following up with a Bronze Award was its Vegan Balti pie, as the pub looks to bolster its meat-free offerings in 2022.

The 2022 awards were judged by 151 experts last week in the UK’s Capital of Pies, Melton Mowbray. There were 23 classes including Pork Pies, Steak & Ale, Game, Vegan, Gluten Free, Dessert and Vegetarian.

David Whitehead, owner of The Woodmans Arms and sister restaurant The Jolly Fisherman in Craster, Northumberland, said “We’re incredibly proud of what the team has achieved here. The Woodmans Arms is a small family-run pub in Whickham that’s competing on the big stage with the likes of Aldi, Marks & Spencers and other pie specialists all over the country.”

David added “We’re ecstatic to have had our two new pies finish in the top three of their class during the busiest year for the British Pie Awards to date.”
